Why "Just take a Break" Doesn't Work

You know that moment when you finally get a break, but instead of feeling relieved, you feel... nothing? Like you’re too drained to even enjoy your own free time? Yeah, I see you.

Burnout isn’t just about working too much, it’s about the way we recover (or don’t). We think, If I just push through this week, I’ll be fine. But what if the way we “push through” is exactly what’s keeping us stuck?

Here’s something that blew my mind: According to Arthur C. Brooks in Build the Life You Want, happiness isn’t about eliminating stress, it’s about managing it. And the way we do that? Micro-recharges throughout the day.

Try This Today:

When your energy starts dipping, don’t reach for coffee, reach for a pattern interrupt.

  • Instead of scrolling your phone, step outside for 2 minutes. Fresh air resets your brain.

  • Swap your “power through” mindset for this phrase: "I’ll come back to this in 10 minutes with a fresh perspective." (Spoiler: You actually will.)

  • Before saying “yes” to another request, pause and ask: "Does this align with my priorities, or am I just trying to be helpful?"

Most of us weren’t taught how to protect our energy, so we give it away like we have an unlimited supply. But the truth? Small boundaries create big shifts.

Try one of these today, and let me know how it feels. Seriously, just hit reply. I’d love to hear from you.

With you in this,

Sophia
